Classic Instruments is pleased to introduce, Scott Avery, as the company’s Performance Gauge Division Manager. “Scott joined our team a little over a year ago and has been a great addition,” says owner John McLeod, “He has really stepped up to get our Performance Gauge offerings out into the performance world.” Scott has fostered many sponsorships such as Kyle Cooper who races a super stock truck in the Champ Off-Road Series, Jenny Treadwell who is an NHRA Division Champion drag racer, and the Great Lakes Stock S/S Association, among others.
“My love of racing started young, says, Scott, watching Big Daddy Don Garlits and Shirley Muldowney race their Top Fuel dragsters. I also spent time at the local 1/4-mile dirt track watching family members race and hanging in the pits. At 18 I lived and worked on the farm of a family who loved dirt oval racing. I got my first taste of driving when they let me run a 1965 Dodge Belvedere at Cherry Capitol Speedway. I was scared out of my mind for the first three laps, then got bumped in the corner, spun out and it was on! For the feature, I decided I would start in the back and it wasn’t long before I worked my way to the middle of the pack and finished fourth my first time out; I was hooked. The following year I built a ‘78 Camaro and had a great time racing it at Onaway Speedway.
I then spent several years working on a career and saving up some money before buying a 1972 Dodge Challenger and a ‘68 Dart GTS. I was living in Indianapolis at the time, not far from Indianapolis Raceway Park. The Challenger had a stock 340 motor with a small shot of Nitrous and I would go to the strip and play around with cars of similar horsepower. But, as any race enthusiast knows, the need to go faster set in bringing with it my next project. With a motor from my brother-in-law and a bunch of other go-fast chassis parts to hold the extra horsepower, we built that small block Mopar up to 500 horsepower and added a big shot of nitrous; it was a solid car, not too fast but fast enough. It was also street legal, so I would take my little girl cruising in her Simpson Racing car seat and she absolutely loved it.
As I began to enjoy racing more often as a spectator, I experienced a new form of racing when some friends took me along with them to Crandon Wisconsin for off-road truck racing. I love all forms of racing, but this was really exciting even from the stands. I may no longer have a go-fast car of my own, but I still spend my free time enjoying the industry and now I am fortunate enough to work in the industry as well.”
Scott now heads up the performance division at Classic Instruments which is responsible for adding nearly 3,800 new parts to what Classic Instruments has to offer. From transmission temp gauges, to brake pressure gauges and even a Stock Eliminator temp gauge plus everything in between, Classic Instruments has a gauge for nearly every monitoring need. All performance gauges include a built-in warning light, data-logging compatibility, and are available in seven different design styles. There are also many custom applications and unlimited style potential available through the company’s custom department. Classic Instruments consulted many racers such as Jason Line and Kyle Tucker to make sure its performance gauges had everything a racer needs. These gauges are truly built by racers for racers.
